Extraversion

Excitement-Seeking

How much you crave stimulation, risk and intensity.

Why it is measured

Thrill-seeking is separable from every other part of Extraversion, and it varies enormously.

What a high or low score looks like

High scorers want noise, speed and novelty. Low scorers find that unpleasant rather than exciting.

Why it matters

A low score does not mean a narrow life. It means the appeal of an intense experience is not the intensity itself.

The items behind it

Four public-domain statements, answered on a five-point scale. Items marked − are reverse keyed: agreeing with them counts against the trait, which is what stops agreeing with everything from producing a high score.

  • +Love excitement
  • +Seek adventure
  • +Enjoy being reckless
  • +Act wild and crazy

Four items is not many. A facet measured this way carries real uncertainty, which is why every score on this site is reported as a range rather than a single number.
