Agreeableness
Morality
How straightforward you are — how little you use pretence, flattery or manipulation.
Why it is measured
Candour is separable from warmth. Blunt people can be kind, and charming people can be evasive.
What a high or low score looks like
High scorers are frank and dislike guile. Low scorers are comfortable with strategic presentation.
Why it matters
This reads as a conduct rule rather than a feeling, which is why we predict it stays roughly constant regardless of who you are dealing with.
The items behind it
Four public-domain statements, answered on a five-point scale. Items marked − are reverse keyed: agreeing with them counts against the trait, which is what stops agreeing with everything from producing a high score.
- -Use others for my own ends
- -Cheat to get ahead
- -Take advantage of others
- -Obstruct others' plans
Four items is not many. A facet measured this way carries real uncertainty, which is why every score on this site is reported as a range rather than a single number.
How this one changes with closeness
This is one of the traits asked four times over — once for each level of closeness, from your inner circle out to strangers. Our prediction for it: flat.
CONTROL. A conduct rule, applied uniformly. If this gates as much as Altruism, H1 is false.
- +I am honest with ⟨group⟩, even when it costs me.
- -I would mislead ⟨group⟩ to get what I want.
- +I keep my word to ⟨group⟩.
⟨group⟩ is replaced by each of the four closeness anchors in turn.
