The Live Wire

do not touch, do not look away

What is The Live Wire?

Unfiltered, unpredictable, and never boring. You say what the room is thinking about four seconds before it would have been acceptable, and you have a physical intolerance for pretence that has made you both enemies and unusually devoted friends.

The cost: You go off. The same absence of a filter that makes you funny at eleven makes you cruel at one, and you have lost people over a sentence you could not even remember the next morning.

The Live Wire, as a person

You are enormously good company for about four hours. Unfiltered, funny, allergic to anybody being pompous, and constitutionally unable to let a piece of nonsense pass unremarked. Somewhere in the fifth hour the aim goes. There is a specific look people who love you exchange at that point in the evening, and you have caught it once or twice, and it is one of the few things that genuinely lands.

Written as one person rather than as a category, which is the point and also the risk — see the note at the bottom of this page.

What the five letters in RUBCQ mean

Each letter is one of the Big Five traits, read in OCEAN order. Select any of them to read what that trait measures and how it is scored.

R

Rooted low Openness

knows what works and sees no reason to leave it.

U

Unbound low Conscientiousness

answers to the moment, not to the schedule.

B

Beacon high Extraversion

radiates outward, visible from a long way off.

C

Challenger low Agreeableness

says the true thing and lets it land.

Q

Quicksilver high Neuroticism

feels it first and feels it fully.

What The Live Wire looks like at their best

Puncturing something that needed puncturing. A room full of people agreeing with something nobody believes will not survive you being in it, and that is a public service.

What The Live Wire looks like under pressure

The volume goes up and the aim goes off. What was funny at eleven is cruel at one, and you often cannot reconstruct how you got from one to the other.

What helps: An early exit, and people who will tell you about it the next day without making it a verdict on you.

How common is The Live Wire?

No population figures are published yet. Rarity is computed from a weekly aggregate release, and the first one appears once enough people have taken the assessment for a cell to clear the minimum publication size of 25.

Nothing on this page claims to describe how common the type is among people. When a release exists it will say which population it came from and how many were in it.

Which types are closest to The Live Wire?

These five differ by exactly one letter — so each stripe pattern below differs from yours in exactly one place. If any of your own letters came back in lowercase, one of these is genuinely as good a description of you as this page is.

What five letters can and cannot tell you

Less than the five scores underneath them, and far more memorably — that is the trade this page is making, deliberately.

A code compresses five continuous measurements into five letters, and throws away everything in between by design. Trait scores have no natural boundaries, so this names a neighbourhood rather than a species: two people sharing a code can differ a great deal, and somebody one letter away may be more like you than somebody who matches all five. Where your own score sits close to the middle we say so — that letter comes back lowercase rather than being decided by a coin flip you never see.

One more, published rather than buried: a personality description is the easiest thing in the world to believe about yourself. If this page felt uncanny, read two others at random and notice how much of those fit too.
