The Undertow

still on the surface, moving underneath

What is The Undertow?

There is far more happening in you than shows. You do not perform, do not explain yourself, and do not much care to be understood by people who have not bothered — but you notice everything, and what you think of someone is usually more accurate than what they think of themselves.

The cost: Almost nobody knows you. You have made yourself difficult to reach and then been genuinely hurt that so few people made the trip.

The Undertow, as a person

There is a version of you that people at work would not recognise. What shows is flat and unbothered; what is actually happening is a running commentary that misses nothing and forgives little. You have views on almost everybody and share them with almost nobody. Getting to know you is a multi-year project with no obvious milestones, and the two or three people who completed it found somebody quite different from the one they started with.

Written as one person rather than as a category, which is the point and also the risk — see the note at the bottom of this page.

What the five letters in RUHCQ mean

Each letter is one of the Big Five traits, read in OCEAN order. Select any of them to read what that trait measures and how it is scored.

R

Rooted low Openness

knows what works and sees no reason to leave it.

U

Unbound low Conscientiousness

answers to the moment, not to the schedule.

H

Harbor low Extraversion

still water; the place people come to.

C

Challenger low Agreeableness

says the true thing and lets it land.

Q

Quicksilver high Neuroticism

feels it first and feels it fully.

What The Undertow looks like at their best

One-to-one, with someone who has earned it. What you say then is unusually direct, unusually perceptive, and worth more than a year of small talk with almost anyone else.

What The Undertow looks like under pressure

You disappear and then resent not being followed. The distance was your idea and the loneliness is real at the same time, which is a difficult thing to say out loud.

What helps: To be pursued slightly. And to notice when someone has actually done it.

How common is The Undertow?

No population figures are published yet. Rarity is computed from a weekly aggregate release, and the first one appears once enough people have taken the assessment for a cell to clear the minimum publication size of 25.

Nothing on this page claims to describe how common the type is among people. When a release exists it will say which population it came from and how many were in it.

Which types are closest to The Undertow?

These five differ by exactly one letter — so each stripe pattern below differs from yours in exactly one place. If any of your own letters came back in lowercase, one of these is genuinely as good a description of you as this page is.

What five letters can and cannot tell you

Less than the five scores underneath them, and far more memorably — that is the trade this page is making, deliberately.

A code compresses five continuous measurements into five letters, and throws away everything in between by design. Trait scores have no natural boundaries, so this names a neighbourhood rather than a species: two people sharing a code can differ a great deal, and somebody one letter away may be more like you than somebody who matches all five. Where your own score sits close to the middle we say so — that letter comes back lowercase rather than being decided by a coin flip you never see.

One more, published rather than buried: a personality description is the easiest thing in the world to believe about yourself. If this page felt uncanny, read two others at random and notice how much of those fit too.
