The Cartographer

maps the territory before anyone has crossed it

What is The Cartographer?

You are drawn to ground nobody has charted, and you would rather map it properly than arrive first. Systems, patterns, the shape underneath the thing — you build the model and then test it to destruction, including your own. You do not need company for this and you are not lonely without it.

The cost: You are so used to being right about the structure that you miss when someone needed agreement more than accuracy. The map is not the territory, however good the map, and people are not a system that yields to a better model.

The Cartographer, as a person

You would rather understand it than be told about it. Given a hard problem and left alone you will build the model, find where it breaks, and come back with something that holds — and you will have tested your own version harder than anybody else’s. You do not need much company and you are not lonely, which people find difficult to accept about you. Your great blind spot is agreement: you have won an argument you should have conceded, more than once, and been genuinely surprised at the temperature afterwards.

Written as one person rather than as a category, which is the point and also the risk — see the note at the bottom of this page.

What the five letters in VAHCG mean

Each letter is one of the Big Five traits, read in OCEAN order. Select any of them to read what that trait measures and how it is scored.

V

Voyager high Openness

goes looking for territory nobody has mapped.

A

Architect high Conscientiousness

builds the plan and holds to it.

H

Harbor low Extraversion

still water; the place people come to.

C

Challenger low Agreeableness

says the true thing and lets it land.

G

Granite low Neuroticism

does not move.

What The Cartographer looks like at their best

Handed a genuinely hard problem and left alone with it. You build the model, test it to destruction including your own version, and come back with something that holds.

What The Cartographer looks like under pressure

You optimise a system that people are inside. The reorganisation is correct and the people in it needed to be consulted, and you find that out considerably later.

What helps: Somebody who will say "they did not need a better plan, they needed you to agree with them" and be listened to.

How common is The Cartographer?

No population figures are published yet. Rarity is computed from a weekly aggregate release, and the first one appears once enough people have taken the assessment for a cell to clear the minimum publication size of 25.

Nothing on this page claims to describe how common the type is among people. When a release exists it will say which population it came from and how many were in it.

Which types are closest to The Cartographer?

These five differ by exactly one letter — so each stripe pattern below differs from yours in exactly one place. If any of your own letters came back in lowercase, one of these is genuinely as good a description of you as this page is.

What five letters can and cannot tell you

Less than the five scores underneath them, and far more memorably — that is the trade this page is making, deliberately.

A code compresses five continuous measurements into five letters, and throws away everything in between by design. Trait scores have no natural boundaries, so this names a neighbourhood rather than a species: two people sharing a code can differ a great deal, and somebody one letter away may be more like you than somebody who matches all five. Where your own score sits close to the middle we say so — that letter comes back lowercase rather than being decided by a coin flip you never see.

One more, published rather than buried: a personality description is the easiest thing in the world to believe about yourself. If this page felt uncanny, read two others at random and notice how much of those fit too.
