What is The Alchemist?
You disappear into things. Intense, careful, easily moved by beauty and by work done well, you have a handful of subjects you have gone further into than almost anyone, and you emerge with things nobody else was going to make.
The cost: You feel every flaw in what you produce and none of the merit. The work is often extraordinary and you are frequently unable to see it, which is exhausting for you and mystifying to everyone else.
The Alchemist, as a person
You disappear into things for weeks. What comes back out is better than what anybody asked for and you cannot see it — you can only see the join that did not quite work and the bit you would do differently. You are moved by things other people walk past: a piece of music, a well-made joint, somebody doing their job properly. The gap between the quality of your work and your estimate of it is the great inefficiency of your life and everybody around you has given up trying to close it.

What five letters can and cannot tell you
Less than the five scores underneath them, and far more memorably — that is the trade this page is making, deliberately.
