Intellect

How much you enjoy abstract ideas, argument and thinking for its own sake.

Why it is measured

Intellectual appetite is separable from intellectual ability, and only the appetite is measured here.

What a high or low score looks like

High scorers enjoy theory and debate. Low scorers prefer the concrete and the applicable.

Why it matters

This is emphatically not an intelligence measure. It asks what you enjoy, not what you can do.

The items behind it

Four public-domain statements, answered on a five-point scale. Items marked − are reverse keyed: agreeing with them counts against the trait, which is what stops agreeing with everything from producing a high score.

  • +Love to read challenging material
  • -Avoid philosophical discussions
  • -Have difficulty understanding abstract ideas
  • -Am not interested in theoretical discussions

Four items is not many. A facet measured this way carries real uncertainty, which is why every score on this site is reported as a range rather than a single number.
