Assertiveness

How readily you speak up, take charge and make your position felt.

Why it is measured

Social dominance is separable from sociability — quiet people are often highly assertive.

What a high or low score looks like

High scorers lead, direct and state their view. Low scorers stay in the background and let others set direction.

Why it matters

Frequently confused with confidence. It is about taking up space, not about self-belief.

The items behind it

Four public-domain statements, answered on a five-point scale. Items marked − are reverse keyed: agreeing with them counts against the trait, which is what stops agreeing with everything from producing a high score.

  • +Take charge
  • +Try to lead others
  • +Take control of things
  • -Wait for others to lead the way

Four items is not many. A facet measured this way carries real uncertainty, which is why every score on this site is reported as a range rather than a single number.
