Modesty: 97th percentile.
I noticed this one while answering, because I could feel myself doing it. Every item asking me to claim something about myself got a slightly more deflating answer than the truth deserved.
Not dishonesty. A reflex.
Why that is a problem beyond one facet
The reflex does not stay inside the Modesty facet. It is applied to all 120 items, so every self-descriptive score on the whole instrument is pulled down a little by a response habit that the instrument then reports back to me as a trait.
The 97 is real. It is also a measurement artifact contaminating everything around it, including the two numbers in the previous entry that started this project. I do not know how much of my 33rd-percentile Altruism is conditionality and how much is a man who will not claim things about himself. Probably both. Certainly not neither.
What you can do about it, and what I have not done
There is a standard family of fixes — model the acquiescence, model the extremity, partial out the response style before scoring. They need a lot of respondents and they make the scoring much harder to explain, which is a real cost on a site whose argument is that you should be able to check the arithmetic.
So for now this site does none of it, and this entry is the disclosure. If you are very high or very low in Modesty, read every other number on your result with that in mind. It is the kind of caveat that belongs next to the score rather than in a paragraph nobody reaches, and getting it there is on the list.
There is a version of this project that is mostly about response styles rather than about closeness. I do not think that is the more interesting question, but I notice that I would say that, having already committed a hundred and twenty items to the other one.
